How to remove a background with hair in Photoshop

Step 1: Selecting the subject

In this tutorial you will learn how to easily remove the background from your subject even when the hair is tricky

In the example i want to remove the white background from the subject so i can add an orange one. To do this first you need to select the main subject using the pen tool but make sure the hair of your subject is not selected. We will do that later. Once you have closed the chain with the pen tool right click inside the chain and select "Make Selection".

Quick Tip

When using the "Pen" tool if you click and drag you will be able to create a curving giving you a more precise selection.

Step 2: Selecting the hair

While the selection is still active go to the navigation bar and select "Select > Refine Edge". This will make a little window pop up and your background should also turn red. If not the in the view window select "Overlay" and that should fix the problem. Now just roughly select the hair of your subject, its OK if you select a bit of background, Photoshop will precisely select the hair for you.

Step 3: Deleting the background

Now that Photoshop has automatically selected the hair for you you can mess around with the "Refine Edge" window to make your selection better. Once you're happy with your selection press "OK" in the "Refine Edge" window. There should be a selection surrounding your subject. By pressing "Ctrl+Shift+I" your selection will be inverted and everything apart from your subject should be selected. Press "Backspace" to delete your background.
